An Oldie But Goodie: Living the Cross Centered Life

LTCCL: CHAPTER 13- Practical Ways to Focus Daily on the Cross

Dear Sojourners,

There are seasons when we must revisit lessons of encouragement studied in the past to remember that the treasures and blessings that ceased through Christ on his journey to the Cross and beyond still remain our only hope to continue to faithfully run our race.

In the seasons that are tough globally, nationally, and personally, such as the times in which we are living and witnessing much turmoil, especially on the political stage, and with so much at stake, especially our faith to trust God and his purposes in a hostile world, it is here that daily gleaning and focuing on truths still echoeing from Christ's passion at the Cross that's of vital importance.

For me, a classic favorite to revisit is CJ Mahaney's Living the Cross-Centered Life. This post is referencing Chapter 13 and the reminders there for practically considering the Cross of Christ. It calls us to stop making excuses and to dig deeper into the available resources that focus on Living a Cross-Centered Life (LTCCL), even in the midst of crises, fears, and cares all around us. It points us to the Word of God, our daily bread to feed weary hearts and souls as we sojourn on.

Bottom line, despite what's happening to us or out in the world, the believer must focus on the riches and vast inheritance we have in Christ's finished work on the cross. It is from that wellspring of delight that we find energy, courage, hope, and reliance to navigate the ever-changing world and worldviews that are increasingly opposing God and his laws and precepts.

There's no justifiable reason not to focus on the Cross daily. This is our Hope for enduring. Our immediate prayer is this: "Lord, help us to be more cross-centered by displaying an obedient response to your truths... from Genesis to Revelation.

May your Word inspire us to live a more cross-centered life; that in clinging close to the cross, its sparks may fall upon us. Lord, help us, through the Holy Spirit's witness of Christ, to see our present and immediate need for a deeper understanding of what Christ has done for us at the Cross, which delivers us from sin, reconciles us to the Father, and saves us eternally. Therefore, we live with the Cross in full view. We live in gratitude, we live charged by, guided by, and refreshed by, we live full of hope, and we live drawn to the Cross of Christ.

Practicality in Action:

1. Start the Day with the Cross

  • Prayer of gratitude: Thank Jesus specifically for His sacrifice before beginning your day.
  • Scripture reminder: Read a passage about the Cross (e.g., Isaiah 53, John 19, Galatians 2:20) to set your perspective.

2. Incorporate It Into Daily Choices
  • Self-denial: Ask, “How can I deny myself in this moment to honor Christ?” (Luke 9:23).
  • Love and forgiveness: When wronged, remember how Christ forgave on the Cross, and extend grace.
  • Sacrificial service: Serve others in small, humble ways, reflecting Christ’s servant attitude heart.

3. Use Physical Reminders
  • Cross symbol: Wear a cross necklace or keep one in your workspace, not just as jewelry but as a prayer reminder.
  • Journaling: Write down one way the Cross changes your perspective each day.

4. Reflect Throughout the Day
  • Pause and think: During stressful or prideful moments, stop and ask yourself, “Christ died for me—how should I respond now?”
  • Breath prayers: Whisper short prayers like, “Thank You, Jesus, for the Cross,” or “It is finished.”

5. Engage in Community and Worship

  • Sing hymns or songs of the Cross: Incorporate them into personal devotion or while driving.
  • Maintain a communion mindset: Even outside of church, stay aware that you’re continually remembering His body and blood.
  • Practice accountability: Share with a trusted friend or group how the Cross is shaping your week.

6. End the Day at the Foot of the Cross

  • Confess: Reflect on your day and bring your failures and victories to Christ, remembering His grace.
  • Rest in His finished work: End with gratitude, knowing that nothing depends on your efforts—Jesus paid it all.
